Web Search (Claude)

The Web Search (Claude) tool (anthropic_web_search) is a native search feature from Anthropic that is directly integrated into Claude models. This tool provides real-time web results with source references.

How It Works

Like the OpenAI variant, this native tool is built directly into Anthropic's Claude models. The model determines itself when a search query is needed and seamlessly integrates the results into the answer.

Advantages Over Universal Tools

Native Web SearchUniversal Internet Search
Directly integrated in ClaudeExternal API call
Better context integrationResults processed separately
Optimized for ClaudeWorks with all models

Automatic Activation

When you select a Claude model (such as a suitable Claude model), this native tool is automatically activated and replaces the universal internet_search tool. This results in:

  • Seamless integration with Claude's reasoning process
  • Context-aware search queries
  • Higher quality answers

Source Citation

Claude's web search tool delivers results with clear source citations. The model indicates which information comes from which source, so you can assess reliability.

Usage Examples

The tool is automatically used when current information is needed:

  • "What are the recent developments in AI legislation?"
  • "How is the Euro doing today?"
  • "What happened at [recent event]?"

Both native tools offer similar functionality but are optimized for their respective models. The choice depends on which model you use - the correct native tool is automatically selected.

Limitations

  • Only available with Anthropic Claude models
  • Requires the organization to have Claude models enabled
  • Search results may vary by region
